How to Prep for Halloween (and Spend Some Quality Time With the Kids in the Process!)

October 26, 2016 | western

If you were to ask a child to name his favorite thing about Halloween, chances are he'd reply, "Candy!". But as adults, we know there's more to Halloween (and most holidays, actually) than just sweets! The holiday also presents a chance to spend quality time with friends and family. Here are a few ways that you can connect with your little ones as we approach October 31!

1) Spend time in the kitchen. Allow your child to choose a Halloween- or fall-themed recipe to make in your own kitchen. Steer her toward choosing foods that are fun to decorate in a fall or Halloween theme, like cookies, cupcakes, savory snacks, or even pizza. (Think less prep and more fun!) We suggest this recipe for caramel apple slices, but you can find lots of healthy Halloween snack ideas on Pinterest.

2) Make your kids' costumes. You don't have to be Martha Stewart to create awesome homemade Halloween costumes for you brood. Instead, all it takes is a little creativity, a couple hours of your time, and the ability to follow an online tutorial (here are some easy, no-sew ideas). Be sure to invite the kids to be involved with every step!

3) Head to the library. Get your little ones excited about reading by checking out several Halloween-themed books that you can read every night on the days leading up to October 31. It's likely that your library will be hosting Halloween-themed events, as well, so be sure to take a peek at the library's event calendar!
